Application Programming Interface
A set of routines that an application can use to communicate with the operating system or other applications. When you create an application for an operating system, you use the API to send messages, request data, write data, display items on the screen, or to have the operating system perform a certain task. The API used for programming Windows applications is known as the Win32 API
