(July 1917) Outbreak of violence in East St. Louis, Ill.

, sparked by the employment of African Americans in a factory holding government contracts. It was the worst of several attacks during World War I on African Americans newly employed in war industries. Some 6,000 African Americans were driven from their homes and 40 were killed; 8 whites were killed.
