Organic compounds are often classified according to the functional groups they contain. Common functional groups include hydroxyl ( 2015; OH), in alcohols and phenols ; carboxyl ( 2015; COOH), in carboxylic acids ; carbonyl ( 2015; C 003D; O), in aldehydes , ketones , amides , carboxylic acids , esters , and quinones ; and nitro ( 2015; NO 2 ) and amino ( 2015; NH 2 ), in certain organic nitrogen compounds.
