He acquired the throne after killing Kenneth III and defeating a Northumbrian army at Carham ( 0441; 1016). He became the first king to reign over territory roughly equivalent to modern Scotland . He tried to eliminate rivals to his grandson Duncan I , but Macbeth survived to challenge the succession.
