Meaning of PRATYAYA in English

In Buddhism , an auxiliary, indirect cause, as distinguished from a direct cause ( hetu ).

A seed, for example, is the direct cause of a plant, whereas sunlight, water, and earth are the auxiliary causes. Sometimes pratyaya is used to refer to cause in general. The idea of causation is important in the Buddhist concept of the cycle of death and rebirth (see pratitya-samutpada ).
