The Amur proper begins at the confluence of the Shilka and Tatar Strait . Among its tributaries are the Zeya, Bureya, and {{link=Ussuri River">Ussuri rivers. From the 18th century, Russians have settled to the north of the river and Chinese to the south, a situation which at times has provoked border clashes.
