Norwegian writer, editor, and theatre director.

He worked to stimulate national pride by linking Norwegian history and legend to modern ideals. Together with Henrik Ibsen , Alexander Kielland, and Jonas Lie , he is known as one of "the four great ones" of 19th-century Norwegian literature. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903. His poem "Yes, We Love This Land Forever" is the Norwegian national anthem.
