City (pop., 2000: 97,775), southeastern Michigan, U.S. Settled in 1795, it originated as a stagecoach stop between Detroit and Chicago .
It was the birthplace of Ford Motor Co. Industrial development began with the building of the Ford assembly plant in 1917 and continued with related automotive industries. It was incorporated as a city in 1925.
