Large, stocky parrot ( Nestor notabilis, subfamily Nestorinae) of New Zealand.

It lives in mountain habitats and is known for its curious and playful character. However, the kea occasionally tears into sheep carcasses to get at the fat around the kidneys; sometimes it attacks live sheep.
