Town (pop., latest est.: 17,000), Egypt.

Located on the west bank of the Nile River north of ancient Karnak , it is the site of a Neolithic town and burial grounds of the prehistoric period (before 2900 BC). It was first excavated by archaeologist Flinders Petrie in 1895. The modern town has pottery and silk industries.
