City (pop., 2000: 545,524), capital of Tennessee, U.S. It is located on the Cumberland River .
Founded in 1779 as Nashborough, it was incorporated as the town of Nashville in 1784. It became a city in 1806 and the state capital in 1843. During the American Civil War , it was occupied by Federal troops (1862). The war's last major battle (1864) took place outside the city. It is a financial and commercial centre, producing shoes, clothing, glass, and tires. Important industries include printing, publishing, and recording. Well known for Vanderbilt and Fisk.
