Northwestern arm of the Arabian Sea, between the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.

It is about 230 mi (370 km) wide and 340 mi (545 km) long and connects with the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz . It is the only entrance to the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean and is important as a shipping route for the oil-producing area around the Persian Gulf.
