PANDA

Meaning of PANDA in English

or giant panda

Species ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca , family Ursidae) of white-and-black forest-dwelling carnivore , found in west-central China, that subsists almost exclusively on bamboo.

Because they cannot digest cellulose, wild pandas (of which there are about 1,000) spend 10–12 or more hours a day eating up to 66 lb (30 kg) of bamboo leaves, stems, and shoots to obtain needed nutrients. About 100 individuals live in captivity, mostly in China. Giant pandas grow to 5 ft (1.5 m) long or more and weigh over 200 lb (100 kg). They live alone except when breeding. Because they have a slow reproductive cycle, they are difficult to breed in captivity.
