ANJO

Meaning of ANJO in English

city, Aichi ken (prefecture), Honshu, Japan, in the middle of the Hekkai Terrace. Irrigation was introduced into the area in the late 19th century, permitting cultivation of two crops of rice and wheat annually. In 1891 the Anjo station on the railroad between Tokyo and Kobe was opened, and the new town developed around it. With far-sighted planning and the early establishment of agricultural cooperatives, Anjo became a model farm community. Its diversified farming of rice, wheat, poultry, and cattle lent it the name Little Denmark of Japan. After 1960 industrialization increased rapidly, and farming became secondary to a large textile factory and several smaller plants making machinery and metal products. Pop. (1992 est.) 146,770.
