The icon, after repeated safe journeys between New Spain (Mexico) and the Philippines early in the 17th century, became known as the heavenly protector of Spain's galleons. After Franciscan priests first enshrined it, Jesuits moved the icon to its present location, a hillside shrine near Antipolo, in 1632. It is the focus of pilgrimages each May. Government-sponsored housing has been built near Antipolo. A highway leading to Quezon City was completed in the early 1980s. Pop. (1980) 68,912.
