Spears (ed.), Auden: A Collection of Critical Essays (1964); and John Haffenden (ed.), W.H. Auden: The Critical Heritage (1983). The most useful full-length critical studies are George T. Wright, W.H. Auden, rev. ed. (1981); Edward Callan, Auden: A Carnival of Intellect (1983); Edward Mendelson, Early Auden (1981); John Fuller, A Reader's Guide to W.H. Auden (1970); Herbert Greenberg, Quest for the Necessary (1968); and John G. Blair, The Poetic Art of W.H. Auden (1965). Monroe K. Spears, The Poetry of W.H. Auden (1963), remains the most critical comprehensive account. Joseph W. Beach, The Making of the Auden Canon (1957, reissued 1971), analyzes Auden's procedure in compiling his Collected Poetry (1945) and Collected Shorter Poems (1950).
