born Jan. 31, 1957, Whittier, Calif., U.S. American swimmer who won eight Olympic medals and was one of only two women to win five medals in swimming during one Olympic Games. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Babashoff won silver medals in the 100- and 200-metre freestyle events and competed on the gold-medal-winning U.S. team in the 400-metre freestyle relay. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she again won a gold medal in the 400-metre freestyle relay and added silver medals in four other events: the 200-metre, 400-metre, and 800-metre freestyle and the 400-metre medley relay. Overall, Babashoff set six world records and was a member of five world-record-holding relay teams. Babashoff won the 1975 world championship in the 200-metre and the 400-metre freestyle events. Although she never won an individual Olympic gold medal, she is remembered for rivalries with the Australian Shane Gould and the East German Kornelia Ender.
