city, northeastern Rio de Janeiro estado (state), eastern Brazil, 35 miles (56 km) up the Paraba do Sul River from its mouth on the Atlantic coast of eastern Brazil, at 43 feet (13 m) above sea level. One of the most important commercial cities of the state, it produces cacao, sugarcane, coffee, rice, corn (maize), and feijo (beans) and processes rum and livestock products. Offshore drilling for oil began in the Campos basin in 1980. The city has railroad connections with Rio de Janeiro, Vitria in the state of Esprito Santo, and cities in the Paraba valley and is also accessible by river and air. Pop. (1980 prelim.) 174,218.
