public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Orlando, Fla., U.S. It consists of a main campus in Orlando and three satellite campuses: Brevard Area (in Cocoa), Daytona Beach, and South Orlando. The university offers an undergraduate curriculum in business, engineering, education, arts and sciences, and health and public affairs. Master's and doctoral degree programs are available in most areas of study. Total enrollment is approximately 23,000. The university was founded in 1963 as Florida Technological University. The name was changed in 1978 to the University of Central Florida. The university is adjacent to the Central Florida Research Park and home to the Florida Solar Energy Center and the Center of Research in Electro-Optics and Lasers.
