city, central Esprito Santo state, eastern Brazil, on the Rio Doce, 60 mi (100 km) from its mouth on the Atlantic coast, at 131 ft (40 m) above sea level. Given city status in 1921, Colatina is a transportation, trade, and manufacturing centre. Its hinterland is the state's most important agricultural region and one of Brazil's largest coffee-producing areas. There is also lumbering. The bridge spanning the Rio Doce at Colatina has made the city, which is 60 mi northwest of Vitria, the state capital, an important point in the regional railroad network. Pop. (1980 prelim.) 61,057.
