in full Comitn De Domnguez, city, east-central Chiapas estado (state), southeastern Mexico, formerly known as Comitn de las Flores because of its profusion of tropical flowers. The city lies at 5,020 feet (1,530 m) above sea level on the central plateau of Chiapas and east-southeast of Tuxtla Gutirrez, the state capital. It is a commercial centre for an agricultural (corn , bananas, and avocados), forestry, and livestock-raising region; the principal industries are distilleries and textile mills. Only 52 miles (83 km) from the Guatemalan border, the city has a customs house. It is on the Mexico CityGuatemala City link of the Pan-American Highway and also has an airfield. Pop. (1980) 27,374.
