CROMWELL, THOMAS

a servant and confidante of Cardinal Wolsey in Shakespeare's Henry VIII. Historically, Cromwell became principal adviser to Henry VIII and was the chief architect of the Protestant Reformation in England. He eventually fell from favour and was executed.
