Meaning of DANTISCUS, JOHANNES in English

born Oct. 31, 1485, Gdansk, Pol. died Oct. 27, 1548, Lidzbark Warminski (Latin), Polish Jan Dantyszek, also called Jan Flachsbinder Polish author, in Latin, of incidental verse, love poetry, and panegyric (formal speeches of praise). Dantiscus was among the first representatives in Poland of Renaissance humanism. He was a courtier to the Polish king Sigismund I and accompanied the king to Vienna in 1515. Later in life he joined the Roman Catholic church, becoming bishop of Chelmno in 1530 and prince bishop of Warminski in 1537.
