Meaning of DE KALB in English

city, De Kalb county, north-central Illinois, U.S., on the Kishwaukee River. Founded in 1838, it was called Buena Vista until 1856, when it was renamed for Johann Kalb, an American Revolutionary War general. Its early growth was attributed to the barbed-wire industry established there by Joseph F. Glidden, who in 1874 invented a practical machine for its manufacture. The economy is now based on agriculture (notably hybrid seed corn ), truck gardening, and manufacturing, including electrical and precision equipment. De Kalb is the site of Northern Illinois University (founded in 1895 as a state normal school). Kishwaukee College (1967) is in Malta, a few miles west. Inc. town, 1856; city, 1877. Pop. (1990) 35,076; (1994 est.) 36,793.
