Situated on the Brahmaputra River just east of the Bangladesh border, it is a trade centre for rice, jute, fish, and other products. A match factory is the major industry. The town has road and rail connections with neighbouring districts, Calcutta, and Bangladesh. Pop. (1991) 66,216.
