FARIDABAD


Meaning of FARIDABAD in English

town, southeastern Haryana state, northwestern India, connected by road with Delhi (north) and Mathura (southeast). It is a local market for wheat, sugarcane, and cotton. Founded in 1607 by Shaikh Farid, Emperor Jahangir's treasurer, to protect the DelhiAgra high road, it was constituted a municipality in 1867. A project for Pakistani refugee resettlement and light industrial development was initiated in the town in 1950. The area about Faridabad comprises part of the southern Punjab Plains. Agriculture and industry are both economically important; jowar (sorghum) and bajra (pearl millet) are grown. Pop. (1981) town, 330,864.
