American bank holding company founded in 1969 as First Chicago Corporation and overseeing the First National Bank of Chicago and the National Bank of Detroit. Headquarters are in Chicago, Ill. The First National Bank of Chicago, formed in 1863, operated international banks worldwide. The National Bank of Detroit, incorporated in 1933, also operated internationally and had branches throughout the Midwest. The current company was formed in 1995 when the First Chicago Corporation merged with NBD Bancorp, Inc. The corporation also owns several nonbank subsidiaries in real estate financing, personal property leasing, and small business investment. The corporation provides domestic commercial banking for industrial customers through a variety of credit lines and advisory services, as well as offering commercial banking in other countries through affiliates, correspondent banks, and its own offices. The banks provide the usual banking services for individuals, including deposit and borrowing services. They also provide trust services in addition to their roles as transfer agent and paying agent. The bond department deals directly with the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee Trading Desk.
