Meaning of GLENVIEW in English

village, northwestern suburb of Chicago, Cook county, northeastern Illinois, U.S. Glenview Road follows one of the oldest known Indian trails leading from the Des Plaines River to Lake Michigan. The original farming settlement (1833) was successively called Hutchings, The Grove, Oak Glen, Barr, and Glen before adopting its present name in 1895. The establishment in 1940 of the Glenview Naval Air Station (now closed) stimulated the community's growth. Nearby Peacock Prairie, a 5-ac (2-ha) tract, is one of the state's few remaining undisturbed black-soil prairies and is a valuable subject for botanical research. Glenview has acquired some light industry, notably publishing, food processing, and tool making. Inc. 1899. Pop. (1990) 37,093.
