public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Indiana, Pennsylvania, U.S. It is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university comprises the Eberly College of Business and colleges of Education, Fine Arts, Health and Human Services, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics. There is also an Honors College and an Academy of Culinary Arts. In addition to undergraduate studies, the university offers master's degree programs in a range of areas and doctoral programs in criminology, education, English, and psychology. There are branch campuses in Punxsutawney (established 1962) and Kittanning (1963). Total enrollment is approximately 14,000. The school opened in 1875. It came under the control of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1920. In 1927 it was made a degree-granting institution and renamed State Teachers College at Indiana. The name was changed to Indiana State College in 1959. The college acquired its current name when it was elevated to university status in 1965.
