Meaning of KHEDIVE in English

Turkish Hidiv, Arabic Khidiwi, title granted by the Ottoman sultan Abdlaziz to the hereditary pasha of Egypt, Isma'il, in 1867 and used by his successors Tawfiq and 'Abbas Hilmi II. It was replaced by the title sultan in 1914, when Egypt became a British protectorate.
