KONVERSATIONSLEXIKON

Meaning of KONVERSATIONSLEXIKON in English

(German: Conversation Lexicon), German encyclopaedia begun in 1796 by Renatus Gotthelf Lbel and C.W. Franke. The Konversationslexikon was the forerunner of the Brockhaus encyclopaedias. Originally conceived as an encyclopaedia for women, it was to have been entitled Frauenzimmer-Lexikon. The encyclopaedia included history, biography, natural history, art, science, and political affairs. Although Lbel died in 1799, publication of the encyclopaedia continued, volume five appearing in 1806. In 1808 the copyright was purchased from the printer by Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus, who issued the sixth and final volume. The title was changed to Brockhaus' Konversations-Lexikon in the 13th edition and to Der Grosse Brockhaus with the 15th edition (192835). See also Brockhaus Enzyklopdie.
