Meaning of LISLE in English

village, Du Page county, northeastern Illinois, U.S., west of Chicago. First settled in 1830 when it became a stopping point for travelers from Chicago to Aurora, it has developed into a residential area with some light manufacturing. Immediately north is the Morton Arboretum, an outdoor park with more than 4,800 varieties of systematically arranged trees and shrubs, covering 1,500 acres (600 hectares). The arboretum was established in 1921 by Joy Morton (18551934), whose father, Julius, inaugurated Arbor Day. Lisle is the seat of St. Procopius Abbey (founded 1885 by Bohemian Benedictines) and Illinois Benedictine College (formerly St. Procopius College, 1887). Inc. 1956. Pop. (1993 est.) 20,490.
