invitational golf competition held annually since 1934 at the Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Ga., on a course designed by the former U.S. amateur champion Bobby Jones and the Scottish golf-course architect Alister MacKenzie. It is 72 holes of stroke play (the player with the lowest score wins). The Masters is one of the world's most prestigious golf contests, and golfers are invited to compete on the basis of their past achievements. Most of the entrants are professionals, although some amateurs are also invited.
