village, Bavaria Land (state), southern Germany. It lies along the Isar River, at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains, at the Austrian border. Chartered in 1307, it was an important trading centre in the 15th and 16th centuries. The village has been famous for its violins since the 17th century, and it has a museum and school of violin making. Zithers and guitars are also made. Mittenwald is a health and vacation resort and a winter sports centre with a chair lift up the nearby Hher Kranzberg (4,564 feet ). Pop. (1994 est.) 8,480.
