public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Cedar Falls, Iowa, U.S. It includes colleges of Business Administration, Education, Humanities and Fine Arts, Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. In addition to undergraduate studies, the university offers approximately 45 master's degree programs and doctorates in physical sciences and education. Research facilities include the Iowa Waste Reduction Center and the Regents Center for Early Developmental Education. The university's Center for Urban Education is in Waterloo. Total enrollment is approximately 13,000. The university was founded in 1876 as the Iowa State Normal (teacher-training) School. Instruction began the same year. In 1909 the school was renamed Iowa State Teachers College, and in 1913 it was first accredited as a teacher's college. It became the State College of Iowa in 1961; in 1967 it was made a university and acquired its current name.
