a rich countess of Illyria who falls in love with Violaa woman disguised as a man, Cesarioand eventually is paired with Viola's twin brother in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Generally noble in bearing, measured, and accustomed to being treated with dignity and respect, Olivia is flirtatious and frivolous in romantic matters. Her behaviour toward Viola-Cesario, with whom she is infatuated, is thrown in high contrast to Viola's mostly cool-headed and subtle wooing of Orsino.
