public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Eugene, Ore., U.S. The university comprises colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Education and schools of Architecture and Allied Arts, Law, Music, and Journalism and Communication. In addition to undergraduate studies, the university offers a range of master's and doctoral degree programs. The law school awards a doctorate in jurisprudence. There are 14 interdisciplinary research centres on campus; other research facilities include the Solar Energy Center, the Oregon Institute for Marine Biology in Charleston on Coos Bay, and the Pine Mountain Observatory near Bend. Total enrollment is approximately 17,000. The university was established in 1872. Instruction began in 1876; classical and literary courses made up the curriculum. The School of Law opened in 1884, and the College of Business Administration was founded in 1914. The Eugene campus, a registered arboretum, contains over 400 species of trees, shrubs, and plants.
