city, Montral region, southern Quebec province, Canada. The city lies on the southern shore of le-de-Montral (Montreal Island), overlooking Lake Saint-Louis, a widening of the St. Lawrence River. Founded in 1713, it was a quiet agricultural settlement until after World War II, when the spread of metropolitan Montreal brought about its transformation into a modern residential and industrial suburb. Both national railways and the Trans-Canada Highway serve the city. Inc. town, 1911; city, 1958. Pop. (1991) 27,647.
