community in Pueblo Libre (formerly Magdalena Vieja) district, southwestern LimaCallao metropolitan area, Peru. Mainly a middle-income residential community, it is dotted with small parks. Although many of the homes are modern, some predate Peru's independence from Spain (1824). The liberators Simn Bolvar and Jos de San Martn both lived in Pueblo Libre in what is now the Museo de la Repblica. The town also houses the Museo Nacional de Antropologa y Arqueologa and the private Museo Arqueolgico Rafael Larco Herrera, a museum of indigenous cultures. Pueblo Libre (founded 1822) contains an engineering school and other departments of the Pontificia Universidad Catlica del Peru (1917). Pop. (1981 prelim.) district, 82,709.
