town, central Vietnam, on the South China Sea coast. It is a minor port on the south bank of the Tra Khuc River estuary, 125 miles (200 km) southeast of Hue. The town has lighter (barge) facilities, a hospital, and a commercial airport. Across the river at Sin Tinh a highway penetrates the interior to a short distance beyond Phuoc Lam; the highway to Cong Tum in the central highlands begins below Trach Tru. Ruins of the Cham (Champa) kingdom are found at Chau Sa, 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Quang Ngai, and 2 miles (3 km) south, where the remains of the Chanh Lo temple are located. Pop. (1971 est.) 46,714.
