died , 1072 Byzantine emperor from Jan. 1, 1068, a member of the Cappadocian military aristocracy. Romanus married Eudocia Macrembolitissa, widow of the emperor Constantine X Ducas, in 1068. He led military expeditions against the Seljuq Turks but was defeated and captured by them at the Battle of Manzikert (1071). On his release Romanus found that Constantine X's son had been crowned sole ruler as Michael VII Ducas. Romanus was blinded and exiled to the island of Prote in the Sea of Marmara, where he died.
