Meaning of SAINT ANTHONY in English

town, north of the entrance to Hare Bay, on the northern peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada, 306 miles (492 km) northeast of Corner Brook. An old fishing settlement with dry docks, ship-repair yards, and cold-storage plants, it is the home of the International Grenfell Association (a charity organization established in 1912 by Sir Wilfred Grenfell, the medical missionary) and is known as a medical centre. Near L'Anse aux Meadows, 16 miles (17.5 km) north, on paves Bay, remains of an 11th-century Norse settlement were discovered and excavated (196168) by the Norwegian archaeologists Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad; further excavations were carried out from 1973 to 1976. In 1978 the site, which provides the earliest evidence of Viking settlement in North America, was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.
