His studies of French literature from the Renaissance to the 19th century constitute a great compendium of detailed information. Additional reading Harold Nicolson, Sainte-Beuve (1957, reprinted 1978), is a biography. A.G. Lehmann, Sainte-Beuve: A Portrait of the Critic, 18041842 (1962), based on recent research, is a study of the critic in the world of the ideas and letters of his time. Richard M.
