segment of the Pacific Coast Ranges in southern California, U.S. The mountains extend south-southeastward for about 30 miles (50 km) from San Gorgonio Pass to the northern end of the Santa Rosa Mountains. San Jacinto Peak (10,804 feet ) is the highest point; the city of Palm Springs lies at its eastern base. The range is largely within conservation areas, including the Mount San Jacinto State Park and a division of the San Bernardino National Forest. The mountains attract tourists, provide outdoor recreation, and serve as an important watershed for the surrounding area.
