city, northwestern Rio Grande do Sul estado (state), southern Brazil. It lies near the Iju River, at 1,004 feet (306 m) above sea level. It was founded in 1707. Santo ngelo is the trade and transportation centre for a largely agricultural municipality that produces corn (maize), feijo (beans), cattle, and pigs. The city is linked by rail and road to Cruz Alta to the southeast, and it has an airport. Pop. (1991 prelim.) 59,688.
