city, southeastern So Paulo state, Brazil, on a tributary of the Rio Tiet, at 2,506 ft (764 m) above sea level; it is part of the southern So Paulo metropolitan area. Formerly known as Borda do Campo and So Bernardo, the original colonial settlement was given town status in 1553 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1889. It houses many large national and international companies. Furniture making, automobile assembling, spinning and weaving, and tanning are among the most important manufacturing activities. Pop. (1980) 381,097.
