science museum established in Chicago, Ill., in 1926 by the philanthropist-founder Julius Rosenwald. He had seen the Deutsches Museum in Munich and wished to have a museum of the same type established in the United States. The collections are housed in the rebuilt (192832) Palace of Fine Arts from the World's Columbian Exposition that had been held in Chicago in 1893. The museum has major exhibits on mining, automobiles, telecommunications, aviation and aeronautics, space travel, agriculture, and medicine.
