city and southeastern residential suburb of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, northeastern Ohio, U.S. It was planned and developed after 1900 by Oris P. and Mantis J. van Sweringen, two entrepreneurs from Buffalo, on the site of North Union, a former Shaker colony (182289), and was incorporated as a village in 1912. A rapid transit railroad system to downtown Cleveland has been in operation since 1920. Shaker Heights is now a restricted community of expensive homes and estates with landscaped parks and lakes (once the sites of Shaker gristmills, sawmills, and woolen mills). The Shaker Nature Center includes self-guided trails. Inc. city, 1931. Pop. (1990) 30,831.
