in full Shanghai Museum Of Art And History, Wade-Giles romanization Shang-hai Po-wu Kuan, Pinyin Shanghai Bowuguan, museum in Shanghai that was founded in 1952 and has one of the finest collections of art in China. The museum has three levelsthe first floor is mainly devoted to bronzes, the second to pottery and ceramics, and the third to paintings and prints. The displays are arranged in chronological order to show the evolution of art. Items on display include weapons, cauldrons, utensils and tools; ceramics from the Neolithic era to the present include examples of Lung-shan Black Pottery. There are life-size terra-cotta statues of a horse and two warriors from the large number of figures found in 1974 near the tomb of the Ch'in emperor Shih Huang-ti northeast of Sian. Pottery from the T'ang dynasty and some fine blue and white Ming vases are also exhibited. The third floor has an interesting exhibit devoted to the tools used in painting and calligraphy, with some scrolls from the T'ang, Sung, Yan, Ming, and Ch'ing dynasties. There is an exhibition of present-day crafts from different provinces, including jade, silver filigree, cloisonn, lacquer, and ivory ware.
