SHEBOYGAN

city, seat (1836) of Sheboygan county, eastern Wisconsin, U.S. The city is located along Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Sheboygan River, 57 miles (92 km) north of Milwaukee. Established as a fur-trading post in 1818 by William Farnsworth, it was settled as a lumbering village in 1835; cooperage became a thriving business in the community. The city's Chippewa Indian name means wind or rumbling underground, referring to the falls upriver. German immigrants played a significant role in the city's cultural and economic development. An active Great Lakes port, Sheboygan is a diversified industrial centre that manufactures enamelware, furniture, plastics, clothing, transportation utilities, and machinery. The city is also noted for its bratwurst and cheese. It is the seat of Lakeland College (1862) and a University of Wisconsin centre (1933). Sheboygan Indian Mound Park, which contains 18 burial mounds (500750 AD) of the Woodland Indians, is a state historic site in the city. Inc. village, 1839; city, 1853. Pop.
